We know many curious things about ants. Some red ants in Europe keep other ants as slaves. They take their slaves from black ants, which are similar in size. When they want slaves, they attack the nests of black ants’ and carry off some of their eggs. These eggs hatch in red ants’ nest and produce black ants. These black ants are then treated as slaves. They are taught to obey orders and made to do all kinds of work. The driver ants of Africa are the most fierce ants. They are completely blind and they march like a big army from one place to another. On the way they eat up any living animal including big animals like tigers, and elephants.
When these driver ants enter a house, the people leave the house and run away into the forest. The ants
then eat everything that can be eaten before going away.

The famous Shiva temple which made Rameswaram so sacred to pilgrims was about a 10-minute walk from our house. Our locality has predominant Muslims but there were quite a few Hindu families too, living amicably with their Muslim neighbours. There was a very old mosque in our locality where my father would take me for evening prayers, I had not the faintest idea of the meaning of the Arabic prayer chanted but I was totally convinced that they reached God. I was about six years old when my father embarked on the project of building a wooden sail boat to take pilgrims from Rameswaram to Dhanuskoti and back. He worked at building the boat on the seashore with the help of a relative, Ahmed Jallaludin. I watched the boat shape. The wooden hall and bulkheads were seasoned with the heat from woodfires.
